I came across a vid of the”darkness” dialogue between Flint and Silver in the forest of Skeleton Island, with French subtitles.
Flint addresses Silver as VOUS!!!! Unbelievable!! Insane!! Whatever possessed the translators??
Italian-speaking fans, please tell me that if there is an Italian version, they address each other with TU, or at least Flint uses TU from the beginning, and Silver switches from formal to informal address pronouns some time during Season 2 (or maybe during the shark date?).
I am SO going to buy the German and Italian Black Sails (Schwarze Segel? Vele Nere?) once I am in Europe.
(starts daydreaming of writing an article on the use of reciprocal address pronouns in three different language versions of a television series)
(kills daydream where it stands)
i think in italian it’s tu since s1, but i may be wrong
I’d have to check the French dub but, to be honest, I could easily headcanon Silver switching from “Vous” to “Tu” somewhere between s2 and s3 AND switching back to “Vous” during they confrontation on Skeleton Island because he’s trying to distance himself emotionally from Flint and it’d be a very effective slap in the face
But in general I wouldn’t be shocked if he just used “vous” all the time because until the 1789 Revolution which established LAWS to force people to address each other using “tu” and “citizen” instead of “vous” and “sir/madam” in the name of Equality (yeah we were Extra like that), using “vous” to address even close friends was very much a mark of mutual respect and affection (depending on context, and the speaker’s social background). So in most period shows/film we tend to use “vous” a lot more, and depending on the characters it can have a LOT of nuance in what that implies
Because French is a language where so much depends on tone and context.
A reverent, feverishly whispered “vous” in the dark as they’re burying the cache on Maroon Island ?
flint @silver in the dark forest
@marginson, point taken re. vous before the French revolution (I have no real “feeling” for French and German, which I speak haltingly). @flintetc, you evil person, I won’t be able to sleep tonight because I’ll be haunted by the image you created.

Ending a dramatic, tragic series on a joke that’s a) genuinely funny and b) connects in a meaningful way to the themes of the show is really A++, I mean honestly.
