I rewatched the scene of his death

(spoilers ahead)

and realised that he doesn’t wait for the British to kill him – he finishes his speech and STEPS OFF THE CART. Of course, he beats the Brits by one moment, but that moment is important: he chooses when to die. A number of Resistance fighters did exactly that in various countries during WWII. And also some prisoners in concentration camps, when they were being “executed” for trying to escape or for organising acts of resistance.

One of the tenderest moments, second only to the sword-training scene imo. My jury is still out re. “was Flint aware or unaware that Silver was lying”, but I am a little more inclined to believe “aware”, because of (1) Flint’s sudden exit from the room, after all the previous show of affection (2) the sudden “daylight” between Flint and Silver for the first two eps of S 3.
