How are you?

The AO3 Tag of the Day is: For those who can’t handle 200,000 words of build-up
PSA:
Fanfic is a gift written in an author’s spare time. Don’t like it? Then it’s not a gift for you. Put it back and move on.
Can we please please normalize subtitles?
Subtitles are:
1. A necessity for deaf people
2. REALLY helpful for those who are partially deaf, have APD (like me and my sister) or any other hearing problem
3. really helpful for those who can’t focus well, especially for those with ADD/ADHD (like me)
4. Is incredibly helpful for people learning a second language, or for bilingual people who can read better than they can hear
5. Even if you aren’t into learning the language, there are countless amazing foreign movies and songs you really can’t enjoy without subtitles!
6. Can help people (like my sister) who have reading comprehension
7. Can help when you’re having a party and you don’t want to pause every time someone wants to make a comment/joke
8. Can help when the characters in the show have a heavy accent (especially in period shows)
9. Let’s be honest subtitles can really add to the humor of the show! (”sobs mathematically”, “screeches loudly”, “angrily fixes bowtie”)
10. Can let people watch content without headphones, or in areas of loud noises.
11. Alternatively, If someone has sensitive hearing or is triggered by loud noises, they can turn the volume down low and still be able to enjoy the content
12. The last bit is VERY true for movies where they switch between soft speaking and LOUD BOOMING NOISES (I’m looking at you hunger games)
13. Very good for helping young kids recognize and associate words and learn to read faster!
14. Really good when you’re eating chips/crunchy candy and can’t hear the movie
15. IS A NECESSITY FOR DEAF PEOPLE!!!
I can’t even tell you how many of my friends made fun of me for needing subtitles, to the point of where I just don’t bother with them anymore. Asking for subtitles at an event is the scariest thing I can imagine. People often complain that it “gets in the way” of their movie. Watching shows (especially in loud areas or with people who talk a lot) is incredibly frustrating for me. People often think I’m stupid for not understanding a show or needing to rewind when someone talks. Most Youtube users don’t bother to create subtitles for their videos (and auto-generated subtitles are crap). I just wish people were nicer to people who need subtitles, and that they were more accessible on other platforms.
Oh my god you guys last semester some guy in my film history class was whining like a kindergartener about how we opted for subtitles on a film that was in English and I went OFF
I rarely, rarely, reblog things I have already reblogged. But this is SO DAMN important.
Also, people who have auditory processing problems might understand stuff better if it’s written out as well
Most dvds in English-speaking countries and Italy have closed captions. Most German dvds don’t. Are the makers assuming that there are no German speakers with varying degrees of hearing loss and no people for whom German is a foreign language? German dvd producers, PLEASE HEAR MY PLEA!!!
“You don’t get to pick and choose. You’re stuck with me.” Silverflint – Kat
(Written for John Silver Appreciation Week – Favorite Relationship – Silverflint)
* * *
The sound of blade on blade rang out in the stillness of the afternoon air. Silver’s
breath came harsher as he moved backwards, parrying Flint’s quick attacks. He was
still too slow and Flint’s sword came up to rest delicately, but deliberately
against his panting throat.Flint raised an eyebrow. “Enough?”
Silver knocked his sword away irritably.
Flint shrugged. “Well then, shall we?”
“Look…if you’re going to….” Silver bit his lip, gazing down
at his own sword, gripping the handle tightly as he debated whether to say what
was on his mind or not.“What?” Flint asked
brusquely.Silver just shook his head, a faint chuckle escaping his
lips. “You know what? Nevermind.”He half turned towards the path leading down from the bluffs
and then abruptly turned back. “No, look…you know what? Fuck you.”Flint merely waited, tapping his sword against his thigh.
Silver faced him. “You don’t get to pick and choose here.
You’re stuck with me, exactly as I am. No more, no less. This is what’s here.
This is who I am now.” His eyes burned into Flint’s steadily. “So it doesn’t
matter whether you want to know more or not. It doesn’t matter.”“Doesn’t it?” Flint muttered.
“No.” Silver said sharply. He started turning away towards
the path once more and Flint reached out a hand to catch his arm.“Wait.”
Silver paused, looking down at Flint’s hand.
“I understand.”
Silver raised his gaze to see it was true. Flint’s face held
that understanding in his eyes, looking at him almost kindly, and yet beyond
that there was a yearning that Silver was only starting to recognize. His laughter escaped him. “You clearly don’t.”
“Perhaps not.” Flint conceded. “But…” his fingers tightened on Silver’s arm. “I
am trying to.”“Why?”
It was a question Silver had considered asking more than once, when it
came to matters between him and Flint and every time circumstances prevented
him from asking, or maybe there simply wasn’t an easy answer. This time wasn’t any different except Flint simply leaned in
and kissed him. Silver’s body went stock still as Flint’s mouth pressed against
his, his lips entreating Silver for more, urging more, more than either of them had previously
offered, a possibility in this kiss that hadn’t existed before… And for a moment Silver didn’t know what to do and then he
leaned in instinctively and Flint’s hand cupped his jaw.Their tongues melded with desire and Silver was aware of
Flint’s body, leaning into his own with hungry grace.“I…” Silver murmured.
Flint merely clasped his face with both hands, kissing him
more fiercely.Silver gasped. This was… He gazed up at Flint and then
they were leaning closer together, stumbling to the ground. He grasped Flint’s body harder against his, Flint’s
hands in his hair.“I am trying to understand.” Flint whispered in his ear, his
voice strong. “But I had planned… after you told me your story, I was going to tell you…” His
hands hovered above Silver’s body and settled tightly on clenching at his shirt. “And if you
don’t tell me your story, how am I to tell you…” His eyes, those devestating sea green eyes
of his, beseeched Silver.“Tell me what?” Silver murmured.
“How much I…” Flint’s mouth found his again instead of
finishing that sentence. There was a throbbing hunger between Silver’s legs,
the building pressure and heat of Flint’s arousal weighing against his crotch.Silver arched into the touch, his hands gripping at Flint’s
body, almost not caring if he ever got an answer at all, as long as Flint didn’t stop touching him.Flint gasped, arching back against him, his teeth sinking
into Silver’s lower lip and Silver moaned. There was only the wind above their
heads and the slow silent wheeling of a gull in the sky. Their bodies rutted together, the
sound of their mingled breaths until at last they slumped together, chests
heaving.Flint half rolled off Silver, but his arm still clasped around
him as he leaned in to mouth a kiss at Silver’s throat, his eyes drifting
closed.“What were you going to say then?” Silver asked.
Flint cracked an eyelid open. “Do you really expect me to
say …now after you can’t?”Silver turned on his side, gazing at him. “Yes.”
Flint chuckled, gazing up at the sky overhead.
Silver watched the pulse of his throat, the rise and fall of
his broad chest, the stain at his crotch, that matched the one between his own legs.He wanted to know the words that were so close to being
spoken, even if he couldn’t tell Flint all the secrets that made up his own past; selfishly, he still wanted that.Flint gazed back into his eyes and saw that. “You must know….”
He started and then came the chuckle again. “I love you.”A quiet admission, simple confession, one that clarified and
altered and defined so much and yet nothing at all for it was nothing that needed to be clarified further. He didn’t know what to say in answer, to match Flint’s
words or his own emotions.Silver lay there in silence, watching the gull overhead.
At last Flint cleared his throat. “You don’t have to… I know
you and Madi.” He left it there.Silver blinked.
“We’re…that doesn’t.” He hesitated and then he simply leaned
over and kissed Flint openly on the mouth. “I love you too.” He murmured
quietly into Flint’s mouth, his breath caressing Flint’s lips. “That much I can tell you.”“It’s enough.” Flint reached up to cradle his face in his
hands, half fiercely pulling Silver in close against his chest. “It’s enough.”
And in the pulse of Flint’s hands, the soft drag of his tongue against Silver’s,
the warm press of his mouth, and the want of his hunger – Silver knew it was
true.
FAFDM rewatch commentary
So I showed @stephanie221 For a Few Dollars More …here are my thoughts on round two…
- @stephanie221 pointed out that Mortimer like….really plays against type being a white-hat-character with a black hat.
- The cowboy flirting scene is just as good if not better the second time around
- Manco/Indio is actually a lot more believable than I gave it credit for…I believe it was @chunchomunos that brought it up as a thing that someone used to be into and I was EXTREMELY skeptical, but they actually have some pretty serious chemistry in the moments that they do interact (is it hate chemistry? maybe. Is it hot? yes.). Maybe I’ll gif/cap a few to show what I mean. I don’t ship it but there is smthn you could work with there.
- and adding to that, Indio is way hotter than I gave him credit for the first time
- why does Mortimer have so many arbitrary skills???
- It’s interesting how much Manco really is like….caught in two places I feel in the way he reacts to his life as a bounty hunter. At moments he seems to really enjoy being a smart-mouthed punk, cf. his very extra entrance at the card game scene. But there also seem like moments where he’s committed to getting out of the life as soon as possible, just settling down. I felt like in the final scene where he’s shooting down Indio’s men he’s legitimately…tired. Anyways maybe this is just me reading into it re: my fic, but that was cool to see.
- relatedly, I realized I subconsciously based the Greygorge – Blake Valley showdown in my fic entirely on the scene where they’re riding between El Paso and Agua Caliente. Something about those winding hills you can almost-but-not-quite hide within.
- the double whump scene is also just as good if not better the second time around
- Unfortunately, I find Clint Eastwood and his pretty hands a lot prettier than I did on the first watch (this is 100% Blondie’s fault, I have such affection).
- Lee is still the hottest forever though ❤ ❤ ❤ MORTY
- WHY is the ending LIKE THAT. It’s a good thing the FAFDM fanfiction tag is so saturated with good stuff :’)
The idea that he might be looking down on me in this moment and find me not doing everything in my power to see his death answered for? That is something I’m willing to put my life at risk over.
