Character whom I am in trouble with: sorry, Gian Maria Volonte’ lovers, I have to say Indio. The villain in Beyond the Law is too ridiculously overdone.

Character I would trust to plan my birthday party: Mortimer. His idea of a party and mine would sort of coincide, methinks. Alternatively, Ben Novak.

This is a fairly unformed, stream of consciousness type post, but I think it’s worth pointing out the importance of having characters whose queerness is an implication. Whose queerness may be there in canon, if you’re looking at it with the right goggles on. Whose queerness may not be something they even realise about themselves. It’s important because for a lot of us, that much more closely resembles our own lives. Not all of us are loudly out or sure of who we are. Some of us take a very long time to either fully understand the exact nature of our queerness or even to realise that we’re queer at all. Some of us appear for all intents and purposes like straight people to anyone looking in from the outside, but we know ourselves that we aren’t. Some of us even feel like perhaps if we’d lived in a different time where we didn’t know that women liking women or men liking men was a thing then we might have gone our whole lives not understanding that there was more to us than what society told us was ‘normal’ and expected. Some of us still don’t really know how to approach other questions about who we truly are. Some of us do live our queerness as an implication (or less) in our day to day lives, and there are a lot of reasons why that might be the case, but none of them make us less queer for it, even if it’s not something we’re planning on changing. So it’s important for us to be allowed to see ourselves in characters too. Maybe the ones who are out give us something to aspire to, and maybe the ones who go on a journey of self-discovery give us something to relate to, but the ones who don’t even know it yet, or who are tying themselves in knots to avoid looking right at the truth, or who know it but don’t want to say it or be it or live it, they are us too. Stop trying to take them away from us.
