black sails fic recs

beanarie:

sort of a welcome present for @theexistentiallyqueer who just finished watching the show for the first time! and i am 2 days late but at least it clearly got completely out of hand? no readmores bc they rarely work anyway. sorry, all.

i’m obsessed with silver and snark, so both of those feature heavily in most of these fics

TEQ also asked for max and madisilverflint, so if anyone has, please do add to this post!

straddling_the_atmosphere

(some really spooky stuff, unforgettable imagery, and, bonus, a couple of fics focused on the maroons)

Magnetism_bind

and
AngryPirateHusbands (mostly smut, always wonderful characterization, and m_b probably has the biggest variety of pairings since winning rarepair appreciation week with outstanding fics for some permutations of the cast no one else has ever thought of)

lacecat (AUs and poly ships for days plus some truly great canon stuff, including a ciswapped retelling of the whole show)

mapped

(tons and tons and tons of wonderful fics)

youatemytailor

(really funny and yet also often completely gutting?)

Craftnarok

(the ultimate, idk what else to say)

Marginson

(just, wrecks me, all of it)

ElDiablito_SF (lovely, cheeky writing, but then there’s
The Isle of Hope

which is devastating in the best way)

iwtv

(faithful and nuanced take on flint/thomas, with some other pairings sprinkled in)

The Power of the Telling
by Farasha (great silverflint character study)

To Resist a Current

by

lapsi (a post-series reunion fic with a very different feel to it, authentic and unflinching)

de novo (from the new)

by Beelieve (idc if you like de-aging fic, i do and this one in particular is superb)

The Tether Series

by stele3

(nuanced, thorny characterization + strong themes of community and found family)

Bad Case of Loving You (Doctor, Doctor)
by meridian_rose  (super charming modern medical au, silver/flint/miranda with platonic silver and max)

Undertow
by Cymbelines (wonderful example of one of my favorite sub-genres of silverflint, where silver quietly loses his bisexual shit after flint confessed to him that the love of his life was a dude)

Winds of Change and Chance

by
PanBoleyn

(his dark materials/daemon au,  an inspired take on the characters and the plot of the show,
series in progress with regular updates)

Lease agreement

and
Seedlings

by
twofrontteethstillcrooked

(not a series but sort of spiritual companion pieces, endlessly relentlessly heartwarming and lovely modern au’s)

long-form fics

With Strange Aeons
by RunawayMarbles (so incredibly creepy and engrossing)

You Can’t Handle The Truth
by Wind_Ryder (modern flinthamiltons au, almost pitch perfect political thriller)

The Unquiet Grave

by
Belewitts (twisted time travel premise that includes a lot of period details and some heart-breaking characterization)

Fifteen Men in September by ballantine (R E A D  T H I S, and also everything else they posted)

the straight walk home by vowelinthug (old west au, R E A D  T H I S
,
and also everything else they posted)

I Will Try to Fix You by Trinity_Blaze

(wip, last updated long ago but the angst, the ANGST)

can’t remember what we came here for by sshomoerotica (canon divergent au where silver is a sex worker at max’s brothel, another possibly abandoned wip but it is so so good)

madisilverflint

John Silver Can’t Get There From Here by
Apetslife

(series where they successfully get england out of nassau and silver gets to have his wife and his captain too)

pass on your way, then, with a smiling face
by youremyqueen (lovely slowish burn)

Burial at sea
by le_mru
(much more moderately slowburn set primarily on maroon
island, wip with regular updates, definitely worth sticking with)

The Only Way Out is the Way Back in

by
samedifference61

(reading this right now and i am very much a fan)

smallpox and
your heart is the only place that I call home

by
vowelinthug

(first is a series which is primarily flint/thomas/silver but madi is vital, and the second is a cozy missing scene for early season 4)

Mending Bridges

by
medusine

(stellar ot4 including thomas)

and the one i would rec door to door like a pushy proselytizing religious type…

Quid Pro Quo
by ragana

(absolutely necessary reading for anyone who likes madi even a little)

also, um. i mean. i wrote some, too, so yeah

ME (glass half full): tenere al corrente = tenir au courant = auf dem Laufenden halten = moment of unadulterated pleasure

ME (glass half empty): Why isn’t there an English word-for-word equivalent? (cries)

shippingdragons:

And oh boy, did he succeed. I always think about this quote, when I watch him as Flint. Or when I talk to people, who say that Flint changed something. In them. In society. In our minds. Black Sails was a story like that. It lives with us now. Always will.

old-long-john:

Silverflint drabble of the week, 22/10/18: Pirate, grace, fire.

Silver missed the colours of the south. This town was dreary; grey people, grey sky. His boat crunched ashore, and he vaulted the bow with a fluidity he knew unnerved strangers. Invalids weren’t supposed to move like spiders in the dark.

The gibbets stood on the embankment: three men – or what remained – beneath a sign which read ‘Pirates’. A shiver swept him, the ghost-touch of a previous life.

“There but for the grace of God go I,” he murmured. “What would we have done, Captain?”

That long-lost, longer-loved voice in his head whispered, ‘We would’ve rained fire down upon them’.

candlewinds:

I told you we were deceived about its having been recovered by the Spanish. Wasn’t entirely true. You were deceived. I built the lie, enlisted the scouts, arranged the sale of the information to Captain Rackham. I conceived it all. You know, I’ve had my fill of hearing you go on about this crew being too weak to keep up with you. Some of them may be weaker than you, some of them may be less smart, but don’t you for a second believe I fit that description. Whatever happens out here, one thing is certain. You will account for me.

Silverflint Drabble of the Week (22/10/18) (Pirate / grace/ fire)

Silver believes that he read the signs correctly. And that now, partnership re-established and bellies full of raw shark, he can speak.

He knocks, enters, closes the door, and says, “There’s something else I need to tell you. I’m attracted to you.”

Flint looks impassive. Maybe he’s trying to observe the social graces he learned before he became a pirate. Maybe he’s shy.

Maybe Silver read the signs wrong. Then he’s a dead man.

Flint sets his shoulders, just like he does before he orders, “Fire.” And then he blinks a couple of times, sighs, and says quietly, “Same here.”
