dduane:

Damn it all. Her work is very dear to me: I would have loved to meet her and tell her so.

I was 10, maybe almost 11, and neither my parents nor the Forsyth County Public Library thought I need restrict my reading to the Children’s Room, and so I read The Left Hand of Darkness. I read it several times over the years, but I do that with a lot of books I like. It wasn’t till three or four decades later that I realized how important that book in particular was to the person I became. I was the right age, it intersected other influences in my life – who knows why?

Thank-you.

You gave us so much. Humour and feminism and new worlds and tips for would-be writers. If I was told that I could only bring one story with meon a desert island, it would be “Nine Lives”, from The Wind’s Twelve Quarters. Simplistic and unpost-modern, but infinitely encouraging.

Your primary LVC ship seems to be Cudlip/Novak, but how feeleth thou about Ryan/Billy Meceita from Death Rides a Horse? I have a pathetically huge headcanon that will likely never become a written out story, but it’s my personal fave.

chunchomunos:

jacksonbently:

oh thats a good one to! (most lvc ships are honestly) I want to rewatch death rides a horse to get a better feel for the characters because I watched it in a stream with a bunch of other lvc movies and they kinda blend together a little. anyway I’d be interested in hearing your headcanons! and if you have a better ship name than ryill because that’s my tag for them and its not the greatest (only two posts in the tag rn sorry)? also having lots of headcanons for a ship but probably not gonna write a fic….that’s relatable

omg first interaction

(hugs both of you, desperately hoping that you’ll watch, discuss, writewritewrite). Please let’s hear all headcanons. If that’s of any interest, am working on another R/B stagecoach story.  (P.s. Everyone is of course free to use whatever nameblends butter their muffins, bur I wonder what’s wrong with slashed initials)

could you give me a brief history lesson on how Emiliano Zapata was bisexual and how people found out, I think this is so cool and neat considering many mexican men (machistas) use him as an example on how macho you have to be and they hate the thought of homosexuality

andreii-tarkovsky:

sure. for those who don’t know, emliano zapata is a mexican national hero, one of the leaders of the mexican revolution, a socialist icon and the perfect image of masculinity that has led to him being one of the perfect examples used to describe a mexican macho and how men are supposed to be and look like, is this last thing the reason why so many people refuse to acknowledge a key element about emiliano zapata and is the fact that he was a bisexual man and they refuse to accept because of this toxic idea of masculinity that exists, homophobia and machismo… due to zapata’s secretive nature, the clues and facts that led historians and academics (the cool ones) to realize his orientation are found in another historical figure many people don’t know about, ignacio de la torre y mier, infamously known as “el yerno de su suegro” due to all the scandals porfirio diaz had to hide, ignacio was an insanely rich man, heir of one of the most powerful families in mexico at the time, reason why porfirio diaz, who was the president at the time made his daughter amanda diaz marry him despite ignacio being blatantly a homosexual man, it was the perfect arrangement for both men, one had the money and the other the resources to fix a reputation and in a sexist society well, amanda was the only one who didn’t gain anything, as often happens marriages quiet rumors of homosexuality due to society not even thinking about the possibility of bisexuality and this one dimensional way of perceive things in which you are are either this or that, let’s point out in this case ignacio was gay tho and he never tried to hide it, that why is referred by historians as “the inconvenient son in law” cause porfirio diaz was always silencing the press about what was happening, the most well known instance is the night of the 42, which some consider wasn’t just a party but the first documented pride demonstration in mexican history in which 42 people took part and only 41 were arrested, i guess you can imagine now who was the one who wasn’t arrested and why? yes the president’s son in law… so what this has to do with emiliano? you may ask, well, here goes… historians account that in 1906 ignacio met a man whom he became infatuated with, this man was emiliano zapata, a young man working in a stable and who had a lot of training and experience with horses, both men fell for each other despite their very antagonizing backgrounds and to preserve the relationship emiliano zapata went to work to the home of porfirio diaz’s son in law and is known that emliano zapata was so favored there, he received a treatment so special, they were basically lovers, ironically this improvement of life for zapata made him see how the rich in mexico lived and he became even more disgusted about the injustice that existed in the country, let’s remember zapata came from a very humble family, so he started getting involved with revolutionaries and obviously he got arrested, ignacio loved him so he asked porfirio diaz to help emiliano, porfirio accepted to free him with one condition, emiliano had to leave the house of diaz’s daughter and never return, emiliano got free and he was forced to return to morelos, his home state, he asked ignacio to follow him and also asked him to leave the city and change his mind and see what the mexican people were suffering and do something about it but ignacio declined, something zapata never forgave and is the reason why he had a vendetta against ignacio for so many years, so emliano after all he learned in the city decided to put into action his ideals and became the revolutionary we all know about and is known he had both female and male lovers, due to his charisma and the respect he got among mexican men, they looked the other way when it comes to his bisexuality, he was helping the people so much they could’t care less who he was fucking, to the point there was a saying that zapata was such a man, he was able to fuck another man, since most of his lovers definitely being revolutionary soldiers and if you consider the toxic ideas that exist when it comes to sex and how is seen in our culture as an act of dominance and is perceived the man is superior for penetrating a woman and these ugly notions are translated to gay sex to the point that even today there are men that have sex with men but since they are the ones penetrating they still see themselves as heterosexuals and a man who penetrates another man is not as vilified as a man who is penetrated by another man so is not shocking to assume these fighting men saw a hyper masculine man and knew of him screwing but not being screwed and still accepted him as one of the boys ‘cause that still happens today if you ever have a conversation with straight mexican men and closeted gay men, but of course as often happens, history is written by certain people and there certain things they label “irrelevant” and in cultures like ours they think the sole idea of saying a man like zapata is bisexual is to taint his name, as if being anything but heterosexual was degrading and as long as those awful ideas exists a lot of our history will be lost, to the contrary i think is amazing, for me it was one of the most empowering things to know emiliano zapata, all errors aside was fucking bi, a man who did so much for my country and my people, a fucking hero and that only makes you think how many details of about lesbian, gay, bi, trans people have been erased because it was not convenient for media and academics… by the way, you can find about this even more details, researching on books, articles, new outlets, the information is there, is just that it never gets to the masses, is not even like some people are saying stuff in obscure forums, no, there’s historians, academics, journalists, memories of people who was alive during the revolution, like legit stuff, we need to just not be that lazy and we’ll find them… so yeah, next time tell machista assholes everywhere that papi zapata was bi.

Great stuff. Would have been ever greater with a few paragraph breaks.

Sometimes I’m overwhelmed with the insatiable desire to learn. To know astronomy and geography and language and architecture; to recognize each constellation, planet, and star; to speak and understand all languages, be able to decipher ancient Greek and Latin text; to grow my understanding of how the human body works; study the differences and similarities of each religion; recognize the use for each herb and seed and sapling.

I want to better myself, not for fame or recognition or power. I just want to understand
