Is this Incident of the Sharpshooter? Favor makes a great detective and a better suspense creator, but good heavens, I forgot how, ahem, imperfect his table manners are in this ep.
So we all know that ‘sex between women was never illegal because Queen Victoria didn’t think it was possible’ is a common misconception, but DID YOU KNOW that it was historically never part of British law because (in the 1920’s) politicians were too worried that, through the act of writing it into law, it would ~give women ideas~??
is there a period lesbian drama set in 1921 uk called “a very great mischief”, and if not why not
I adore the idea that the entire British government was convinced that literally the only thing stopping women from becoming lesbians was them not knowing it was an option.
Well I’m sure in a lot of cases they damn sure weren’t WRONG here….
Ok but let us never forget that the Victorians literally pioneered the art of Gals Being Pals ™ as women would be living in full fledged romantic relationships and they would be like “aww so cute they are clearly The Very Best Of Friends!!!”
“Black Sails is best at the kind of love that doesn’t involve character spelling it out. Gestures always speak louder than words: Vane beheading Ned Low; Jack being uncharacteristically brutal slaying Redcoats as Anne lay bleeding on the floor; Max and Anne holding hands in the snow. Idelle slicing bread for Anne; Jack blowing up the fort he’d spent ages rebuilding in Season 3 so that Charles could escape. Just like these actions, Flint shooting Dooley is an act of love.”
YES. Violence (to others than the beloved) as love sounds coherent and plausible in the specific contexts of this series. Difficult to accept, but yes.
Does everyone understand? Does anyone have anything to say?
A problematic scene when seen in its context (both what comes before and what comes after). YET the depth of feeling is amazing. I have hardly ever seen such depth and complexity between two fictional characters.
I love that jack’s entire character arc is essentially him going from revering and trying to model himself after all these hyper masculine dudes (vane, teach, all of those long dead legendary pirate guys he idolizes) to letting go of that pride and surrounding himself with smart, tough competent women and realizing he’s much better off when he trust and listens to them. Even his final scene in the series involves him inadvertently bringing another woman into his life. One little moment in the finale I loved was when he’s like “… before the ink dries on whatever it is that you two have agreed upon”, to Max and Marion Guthrie, like, he’s completely okay placing his entire future in these two women’s hands and doesn’t even know what they have planned… he came such a long way from his “beware the women” season 2 days
I don’t talk about him as much as I do other characters, but I really love this lesbian collecting fashion icon. And I totally stand by my theory that his flag is inspired by Anne.
And as he goes through these stages he becomes more competent in his own skills (running a ship, giving advice to other pirates, and choosing a punishment for Rogers which is far better than a painful, violent death) (and recruiting new crew members 😉 )
Good heavens: my Italian sources couldn’t tell me anything much, but the series was shown between 2015 and 2017. The plot summary below says that Capt Flint is the most feared pirate in the Seven Seas, and “takes young John Silver under his protective wing”. Will be in Italy in May, and will try to get the dubbed dvds (Raise the black = Alzate la bandiera nera?)
Internationally speaking, there’s a beautifully-written story/meditation in German:
Trama: Il Capitano Flint è il pirata più temuto dei sette mari e insieme alla sua ciurma vive nell’isola di New Providence, un paradiso per avventurieri, ladri, prostitute e disperati in cerca di fortuna. Flint prende sotto la sua ala protettrice il nuovo membro del suo equipaggio, un giovane di nome John Silver, in possesso di una mappa che indica l’ubicazione di un tesoro spagnolo su cui Flint vuole mettere le mani.
