One of the minor loves of my life. For those who have never seen it, Call the Midwife is a show that passes the Bechdel test with flying colours: women (nuns who are trained midwives and work with lay midwives) who work together, for and with other women, laugh at one another’s jokes, have conflicts with one another, and men, while very much there (as doctors/ husbands/ lovers/ villains), are not at the centre. (In one case, they even fall in love with one another).

rose-of-pollux:

Happy Birthday to Robert Francis Vaughn, who would have been 85 today.

[11/22/32 – ∞]

A master actor of stage and screen, able to bring to life so many characters, from the shellshocked Lee to the all-loving hero Napoleon Solo, or from the zany Byron Orlock to his own personal favorite, Hamlet.  He did and gave us so much, and today, I celebrate (in his own words) his fortunate life.

So, happy birthday, my hero, and thank you for everything.

And he was a liberal, a civil rights supporter and a public opponent of the Vietnam war.
